What is a Volunteer-a-thon?
A marathon day of service creating large-scale, meaningful results organized especially to raise money for a cause. It's like a walk-a-thon or bike-a-thon, only you'll be raising pledges for hours of time volunteered.
What will our pledges support?
The Philadelphia Cares Day Volunteer-a-thon raises critical funding for Greater Philadelphia Cares' year-round programs and events. Our success has always been fueled by the generosity of our network of volunteers and community partners, and every penny counts. Pledges will enable Greater Philadelphia Cares' volunteers to expand the horizons and self-confidence of children by teaching them to read, rejuvenate neighborhoods ravaged by urban blight, and bridge the widening technology gap in underserved communities.
Is there a minimum pledge amount?
There is no minimum pledge requirement. We suggest that you set a personal fundraising goal and do the best you can!
What if I need more pledge forms?
Call Greater Philadelphia Cares at 215-564-4544 and we'll send additional copies to you.
When is the registration deadline?
THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS MONDAY, OCTOBER 9th. To ensure that all of your information is prepared and ready for you when you arrive at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, you are strongly encouraged to sign up by this date.
Can we still sign up after the deadline?
Yes, we can always use more volunteers! However, teams that register after October 9th will not be assigned to a school until the morning of the event. You will play an important role in making sure schools receive the number of volunteers they need, filling in any gaps on the day of the event if teams who have registered early end up with less people than they initially expected.
What if my team is much smaller or much bigger than I anticipated?
No problem. Just make sure to keep Greater Philadelphia Cares informed of any significant changes to your team size.
Can I pick the school I want to go to?
Unfortunately, no. We need to place teams where they can fit in regards to their size and transportation needs. However, if you would like to perform your service in a certain neighborhood, we will do our best to match you to an available site there.
Do we have to come to the Mann Center for the Performing Arts?
Yes! We need everyone to report to the Mann Center in order to register your actual team members who are there that day. Plus, it's loads of fun and it gets your team energized for the day!
What should we wear?
Wear very comfortable clothes that you won't mind getting dirty or paint-splattered.
What should I tell people to bring?
Encourage your team members to bring a bagged lunch in case they get hungry. We will provide a light breakfast before the event as well as refreshments following the event. Also, please have your team members bring work gloves. There will be all sorts of projects involving painting, gardening, and clean-ups.
Can I sign people up for my team on the day of the event?
Yes, but please make every effort to do all your recruiting ahead of time and turn in those names by October 9th. In most cases, we will be able to accommodate a few extra team members.
Can my team members bring their spouse & kids?
Sure - as can your neighbor, your doctor, your mail carrier! All that's required is to complete the online registration form as part of your team. Anyone over the age of six can participate! We kindly ask that parents be responsible for the safety of their own children.
Can we wear our own specialty T-shirts or hats on the day of the event?
Absolutely! It's a great way to show some spirit.
