PHILADELPHIA MARATHON VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Be part of the Philadelphia Marathon, a world-class athletic event! Be among some two thousand volunteers on hand to support the race. There are opportunities to assist with pre-race activities such as packet stuffing, registration, expo, and the information booth. Race day activities will include course monitors, support at the start, finish, and other parts of the course.

There is a role for everyone! Sign up with friends, family, co-workers, schools, churches, nonprofit groups, or any other group of people. You can work together and have fun while supporting this wonderful event. Greater Philadelphia Cares is partnering with the Philadelphia Marathon for this event of which we call all be proud. For more information, please call Jill at 215-564-4544, or email volunteer@gpcares.com.

All volunteers will receive a free 2008 Marathon Jacket.

VOLUNTEER GUIDELINES

  • Volunteers must carry a photo ID with them at all times during their assignment and must be prepared to show this to a race official and security personnel upon request.
  • Volunteers must wear their 2008 Philadelphia Marathon volunteer vest and credential (if provided).
  • If at any time during your assignment you have a problem, notify your team captain immediately, who in turn will inform the proper authorities.
  • Dress appropriately casual and for the weather! Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Do not bring backpacks, cameras, or other valuables with you to your assignment. The race is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Volunteers are required to obey the “No Smoking” and “No Alcohol” policy for the duration of their assignment.
  • Volunteering is a great experience. Be prepared and flexible for a long day. Reassignments may occur. Morning coffee & a light lunch will be provided for volunteers checking in at Health & Fitness Expo or on race day at the Oval. Volunteers working along the race course should bring a lunch.
  • Volunteers working Food and Fluid Distribution at the Start, along the Course and at the Finish will be provided with vinyl gloves that must be worn at all times.
  • As a volunteer, be prepared to answer many types of questions. Take pride in your role. Familiarize yourself with the course maps & start/finish diagrams. These maps & diagrams will provide valuable information to make the participant’s experience a great one.
  • Runners are timed with a ChampionChip® - a computer timing device tied to their shoe. If you collect one or more of these “chips” (at a fluid station, along the course, at the start, the finish, or anywhere else if a participant decides to drop out of the race), please return it to your team captain or race official.
  • Please be reminded: volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
